Doctor Who Tumblr Welcome Package

Hello! And welcome to the Doctor Who fandom! This is your tumblr welcome package to get you up to date with the fandom. So lets get started!

Note: I am assuming you know what happens in the show so we will not go over that. But because of this there may be some spoilers for people who haven’t watched the show. Just a heads up!

Introduction: The Doctor Who fandom is predominately based on the 2005 series of Doctor Who. Although there are a few blogs dedicated to the older series. Gifs, photosets, fics (fan written stories about the characters), manips (photoshop manipulations) and many other things are shared within the tumblr fandom.

The Doctor is usually identified by the order of regeneration eg. Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor is referred to as nine, David Tennants Doctor is referred to as ten. This helps with an ease of understanding for everyone. (Another tidbit, the ‘other doctor’ spoiler Rose ends up with is usually referred to as Tentoo.)

Popular crossover shows that people enjoy are Supernatural (this crossover is called SuperWho), Sherlock (this crossover is called WhoLock) and all three (SuperWhoLock). There are many other crossovers but these are the predominant ones on tumblr.

When people on tumblr refer to Moffat, they mean Steven Moffat who is the shows head writer. He started being the head writer at the beginning of season 5, however before then he wrote some noteworthy episodes such as ‘Blink’. The head writer before that (since the 2005 series began) was Russell T Davies who continues to write for the Doctor Who spin off show Torchwood.

Torchwood stars Captain Jack Harkness and his team in a more adult Science Fiction drama show. Note: this series begins in the DW world at the start of series three once the spoiler corrupt Torchwood was shut down.

Doctor Who Dos and Don’ts:

1. Don’t call the show Dr Who, tumblr is pedantic about the show being called Doctor Who or DW, for short.
2. Don’t tag your hate in the tumblr tags. Most of the fandom don’t mind if you don’t like a specific character or ship but the people browsing the tracked tags are usually looking for positive things about the character.
3. Do accept all ships even if you do not ship them yourself. Healthy discussion is always encouraged but it should never get heated or personal.
4. NEVER mention the fact that Doctor Who may kinda possibly be (not real).
5. Don’t act like you are a ‘better’ fan of the show just because you watched the old series/ started watching it when it first came on tv/ second cousin owns a sonic screwdriver.
6. Do tag spoilers (usually with just ‘spoilers’ or the episode title) for at least a week after a new episode has aired. Keep in mind that people from different countries have different air dates to where you live.
7. Don’t repost edits or gifs/ gifsets etc that other people put a lot of time and effort into. If you want to use a gif etc on your blog ask permission and give credit to them.
